Discovering the Pol chapel: a walk steeped in legend

      • Stroll

      • For the whole family

      • 600 metres from the villa

Not far from the villa, the Pol chapel offers a unique getaway combining history, legends and enchanting landscapes. This emblematic site, nestled in the heart of the rocks, recounts part of Brittany’s spiritual and cultural history.

According to tradition, in the VIᵉ century, Saint Pol, one of the seven evangelizing saints of Brittany, left Cornouaille and crossed the English Channel to land on Ouessant. After a journey of several stages, he reached the pointe de Beg Pol, at Brignogan-Plages. Legend has it that he landed in a mysterious stone trough.

Inhabitants of the time tried to transport the trough by horse to the village of Plounéour-Trez, the parish capital. But every time they tried, the ropes broke, making transport beyond the shore impossible. The villagers saw this as a divine sign: Saint Pol wanted a chapel to be built on this very spot.

The current chapel, rebuilt in 1870 and restored in 1999, still houses this famous trough.

A few steps from the chapel, you can admire a calvary dating from the same period as the old chapel, as well as a sentry box once used to watch the coast, a vestige of the network established by Vauban in the late XVIIᵉ century.

This walk, combining religious heritage and maritime legends, is an invitation to discovery and contemplation. Be sure to visit the Pol chapel and soak up the mystical atmosphere that surrounds this exceptional site. Children will also enjoy climbing through the granite to the observation post.
